On the Eve of July 1st, GoRecycle Calls for Action

Press Release |

Montreal, June 12, 2024 – As thousands of Quebecers prepare for moving day on July 1st, an environmental issue emerges: the frequent abandonment of refrigeration and air-conditioning appliances on our sidewalks. This behaviour raises environmental concerns that require immediate attention.
Improper treatment and recycling of these appliances contribute to the release of greenhouse gases, thereby accelerating the degradation of our environment. Faced with this challenge, it is essential to adopt responsible recycling practices.

GoRecycle, the organization recognized by RECYC-QUEBEC for responsible recycling of household cooling appliances, warns against the consequences of abandoning these units, encourages collective mobilization, and urges citizens to adopt responsible recycling behaviours.

Abandoning refrigeration and air conditioning appliances on sidewalks poses a serious threat to our planet. We are committed to promoting responsible recycling practices throughout Quebec

Concrete Solutions for a Sustainable Future

During this moving period, GoRecycle reminds everyone that there are concrete solutions to encourage responsible recycling, including 300 official GoRecycle drop-off points available throughout Quebec, and a removal and recycling service with the purchase of a refrigerator. Most retailers take back old refrigerators/freezers when you buy a new one. This service allows the effortless disposal of these cumbersome appliances and ensures that they are properly recycled.

Additionally, the GoReuse program allows consumers wishing to buy second-hand to access a network of reliable partners committed to meeting the highest industry regulatory standards. These used appliances are of high quality and come with a purchase guarantee. Reusing these appliances extends their lifespan, thereby reducing waste and contributing to the fight against climate change.

Every action counts. By recycling responsibly or turning to reuse, we can all contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preserving our planet

Jules Foisy Lapointe

A Significant Environmental Impact

In its third year of service, GoRecycle has made a significant environmental impact. In 2023, the organization recovered over 160,000 appliances, collecting 6,800 tons of materials that were recycled and revalued at 95%. Thanks to these efforts, the release of approximately 138,000 tons of greenhouse gases was avoided.

Bringing back a single refrigeration appliance is like 680,000 people refusing plastic straws. Recovering three abandoned air conditioners is equivalent to taking a car off Quebec’s roads

Jules Foisy Lapointe

GoRecycle encourages all Quebecers to adopt responsible practices for recycling their refrigeration and air conditioning appliances.
