Recovery and reclamation: strong actions for the environment

Message from the general manager

At the close of this 3^rd year of operation, GoRecycle has confirmed the strong performance of its activities, as well as the relevance of recovery and reclamation operations in Quebec. Its growing presence across the province, strengthening ties with members and increasing volumes recovered bear witness to the trust the public and its partners continue to place in the organization. I share this pride with the entire GoRecycle team.

The 2023 statistics speak for themselves: nearly 160,000 household appliances and air conditioners recovered, an excellent materials recovery rate of over 95% and more than 138,000 tonnes of GHGs avoided. This outstanding record goes hand in hand with important (and essential) campaigns to educate partners and the public on healthy recycling and reclamation habits. We also wish to mention the successful launch of the GoReuse program, the fruit of sector consultations and of ongoing efforts made over nearly three years.

But our work doesn’t stop there. On the contrary! In order to make recovery and reclamation simple gestures for Quebecers – but significant ones for the environment and for the fight against climate change – we must adopt a realistic approach that’s rooted in our reality. The experience of other forerunners in this field must be considered if we want to avoid mistakes, and most of all, maximize everyone’s support towards GoRecycle’s mission.

As the only management organization recognized by RECYC-QUÉBEC, GoRecycle fulfills its mission to implement effective, efficient and environmentally sustainable programs and solutions.

GoRecycle is proud to publish its 2023 Annual Report, which shows considerable progress for the second year in a row.

Thanks to the significant collaboration of stakeholders, GoRecycle was able to recover 159,900 household appliances and air conditioners in compliance with the Regulation respecting the recovery and reclamation of products by enterprises (hereinafter, the Regulation).

Recovery performance

• An overall increase of 27% in the recovery rate when compared to 2022
• 32% increase in subcategory 1 units recovered
• 21% increase in subcategory 3 units recovered

A local and social commitment to Quebec

• Launch of the reuse program’s recruitment phase
• Promotion of the 3Rs: source reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery
• Collaboration with Quebec collectors for all appliances recovered
• Support for the social economy by employing collectors with charitable missions
• Partnerships with retailers to collect and recycle used refrigerators or freezers when buying a new one
